Our featured demonstrator for the August 25th meeting is Mike Jackofsky. He comes from Harmony Grove, California. Mike gave up his law practice seven years ago to devote full time to his woodturning. Mike specializes in hollow forms, but he also turns thin, natural-edge, open bowls, and off-balance asymmetrical pieces, including hollow forms with wings and sculptural turnings. Most of his pieces are made from unique burls. Mike has demonstrated at the 2007 AAW in Portland. He also teaches at the Craft school in Provo, UT. His work is featured at the Sam Maloof Historical Residence and Museum in Alta Loma, CA, as well as the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, CA.  You can see Mike's work on his web site WWW.MIKEJACKOFSKY.COM.  --- Joe Levy, Program Chair

For this all-day special demo RESERVATIONS are necessary.  If you plan to attend email your reservation immediately to Ron Lindsay at  RSVP@channelislandswoodturners.org and mail your check to him: $35 for members and $45 for guests by August 17th. After that date if there is still room neighboring woodturning clubs will be invited to attend.  Friends of CIW who read this website may reserve now. Don't wait to send in your reservation!  Lunch is included.

The July 29th meeting featured our meeting-site host, custom cabinet maker and woodturner Levi MizeHarvey Paskowitz writes:  Levi set up an EXCEL spreadsheet to calculate router angles for building segmented cylinders. He will send copy to Ron who will distribute it to the membership. He will also include plans for the fixture that he designed. Levi then demonstrated how to assemble the cylinder, install the routing fixture and cut the flutes with a plunge router. He recommended screwing the end piece to each stave for safety. Thanks Levi!

Ron Lindsay's photos from the meeting:

Bruce Berger showed the steady rests now available at reasonable prices. 4-wheel works with the laser-assisted hollowing systems like Jamieson's.

Levi Mize, shop owner, gave the demo on column fluting using his shop made jig.

Levi uses books, math and spreadsheet to compute the stave angles. The stave angles are cut on a router table and an angled router bit. His own spreadsheet will be available.

Levi glues up the column's staves. The cradle helps the initial assembly. Ropes serve as clamps.

He screws every stave to an end plate at each end for safety during cleanup turning.

This shows the sandpaper belt fixture for sanding the column before fluting.

The plunge router rides in a slot using a matching router collar.

Shop-built indexing wheel. Template is available on internet. Vise-Grip clamp locks it.

Cutting the flutes. These are parallel, but this jig can handle tapers also.

The flutes are revealed.

Brian Cohen began the Show-n-Tell with his metal-lidded boxes.

Warren Brown explained how he reversed turned this deep and irregular piece.

Seth Maccarthur with nice burl bowl.

Ron Lindsay turned a magician's wand. A diamond was fitted in the handle.

Stephen Case-Pall turned multiple tops and a special top platter.

Al Geller with Liquid Amber natural edged bowl.

Final preparations for the Ventura County fair were also discussed.  Results of the Judging and photos are on the VCFair2007 page.  We have a new booth at the fair this year.  It was designed by Al Geller and he and a work crew consisting of Bruce Berger, Chuck Stevenson, Jim Rinde, Stephen Case-Pall, Bob Fahrnbruch, Sam Turner, and Jim Word built the booth in Greg Radley's woodshop at Cabrillo Middle School.  It was installed next to the Wood Carver's booth in the Home Arts Building.

Note that the September meeting is one week later than usual on the 29th. It will be a hands-on session at the Oxnard High School.

For those of us who are Harry Potter fans or have kids and relatives who are, Ron Lindsay has spotted a website that sells magic wands. This is a great spindle turning project that is appropriate for turners at all levels of skill.
