Meeting Information: Saturday, 21 January 2012,  9 AM to 12 PM

Dave Staeheli: Turning an Off-Axis Goblet

Dave Staeheli

At Cabrillo Middle School Wood Shop in Ventura

Located near the junction of Main and Santa Clara streets on Santa Clara St.

Note that due to insurance requirements only current AAW members may participate in using the lathes: but everyone can watch and learn.

As noted above in blue, our agreement with the school, and due to the AAW insurance policy that covers our activities, only current members of the AAW will be allowed to use the lathes.  Whether or not they plan to turn at this meeting, we strongly suggest that all members of Channel Islands Woodturners join the national AAW for the many benefits including the excellent journal and the annual symposium.

25 February 2012 - Hands-On Meeting

President’s Message

Happy 2012!

Here we go again!  So let’s get our acts together and get turning wood.  We have a meeting next Saturday the 21st at 9:00 A.M.  At this meeting we’ll have a half-day demo by our own Dave Staeheli, on turning re-centered.  I think he’ll do a goblet and perhaps a couple of other things.  In addition, at the meeting we’ll talk about the details and preparation for John Beaver’s workshop scheduled for February 9th and 10th at Woodcraft featuring John’s “Wave” techniques, and we’ll start planning our attendance to the AAW Symposium in San Jose.  I hope all of you will bring an item for show-and-tell, and I think there will be a couple of additional subjects to provoke conversations and sharing of opinions.

All newer members are encouraged to attend, participate, speak up, and feel free to bring a tool to sharpen or a piece of wood that is presenting a challenge.

Also remember it is time to pay our annual dues of $25.  Please mail a check to Ron Lindsay at 1795 Lyndhurst Ave., Camarillo, CA 93010.

A lot of us attended the 10th Annual Holiday Party most gracefully hosted by Lynn and Al Geller.  As usual we had excellent and plentiful food, a beautiful show-and-tell, a rather animated gift exchange, and of course great conversations as we shared all sort of stories.  With some trepidation we look forward to having our Holiday Party elsewhere this year.  I know I express the membership’s most sincere THANK YOU to Lynn and Al for opening their home to CIW for the last ten years.

I look forward to our seeing you next Saturday at Cabrillo Middle School.

Pedro

Mentors Available

The following list of members have offered to act as mentors to any member of the club who wishes to have hands-on instruction.  This can be done at the mentor's shop or at the member's home on their own lathe.  It is an excellent way for beginning turners to quickly learn basic skills and safety and for more advanced turners to develop new ideas and skills.  Using your member roster, give any mentor a call to arrange a time.  If you don't have your roster or want to add your name to the mentor list, give the newsletter editor a call.

Each mentor can teach basic skills; some have also listed specific topics in which they are especially interested or have more advanced skills.

Bruce Berger         Any topic including segmented turning

Warren Brown       Any topic

David Frank            Any topic

Al Geller                   Open form bowls, natural edge bowls, bowl design

Ron Lindsay           Any topic including hollow turning freehand

Jim Rinde                Anything to do with using and turning resins, turning goblets, hollow turning with a boring bar with/without a laser

Herm Ross              Miniatures; tool making and metal work

Chuck Stevenson Basic turning; he is learning to do segmental work

Gary Toro                Anything you want to make

Sam Turner             Any topic (if he doesn't know how, he will learn it with you)

Turning/Turner of the Month

This month we feature David Frank with his natural edge turning presented at the Show and Tell at the Holiday Party.  David is honored to highlight his return to serious turning after a long and painful series of problems and surgeries involving his neck and back.  David has been a strong pillar of our club for many years, and we hope he has fully recovered his strength and enthusiasm.
