Meeting Information: Saturday, 19 November 2011,  9 AM to 4 PM

John Beaver: How to Make Cut and Re-Assembled Bowls

John's website is at http://www.johnbeaver.net

At Cabrillo Middle School Wood Shop in Ventura

Located near the junction of Main and Santa Clara streets on Santa Clara St.

Note that due to insurance requirements only current AAW members may participate in using the lathes: but everyone can watch and learn.

As noted above in blue, our agreement with the school, and due to the AAW insurance policy that covers our activities, only current members of the AAW will be allowed to use the lathes.  Whether or not they plan to turn at this meeting, we strongly suggest that all members of Channel Islands Woodturners join the national AAW for the many benefits including the excellent journal and the annual symposium.

January 2012 - Regular Meeting

President’s Message

It is time for the November meeting, and our by-laws call for elections. We will take a vote to elect Club Officers for calendar year 2012.

The nominees are:

President: Pedro Morillas

Vice President: Michael Ingham

Treasurer: Ron Lindsay

Membership: Ron Lindsay

Demos and Programs: Bruce Berger

Librarians: Bruce Olander and Joe Shivokevich

Newsletter:  Ron Lindsay

School Mentoring: Al Geller

Everyone is requested to attend the next meeting Saturday November 19, 2011 at Cabrillo Middle School to vote on the proposed candidates, or present other candidates to the membership. We will hold the election promptly at 9:00 AM, just before John Beaver starts his presentation.

Remember John Beaver’s demo will last all day.  Please bring your own chairs and $35.00.  The Club will have lunch and drinks available.

Some of you may or not know John’s work has been admired and awarded prizes at many judged events during the last three years or so.   He has distinguished himself, not only for his “keen eye” while creating beautifully simple flowing forms, but for his unique technique of incorporating a “wave” in his bowls and hollow forms.  To the best of my knowledge, this will be the first time John will show a group how he does “the wave”.  If you can make it, I think you will be in for a treat.  Please notify RonaldBLindsay@verizon.net , so we can have enough food and drinks for everyone.

Next month will be the 10th Holiday Party at Lynn and Al Geller’s.  I am sure all of you who paid the Club’s yearly dues have received an invitation in the mail.  Please RSVP to Barbara Turner as soon as possible.  The program is very simple but a lot fun; when Lynn says it’s time to eat, everyone gets to enjoy the Pot Luck.  After dinner we have a show-and-tell.  Soon thereafter those who brought a turning  will draw a raffle ticket to receive a surprise gift.   So turn something for the show-and-tell,  and turn something for the gift exchange.

Pedro

Mentors Available

The following list of members have offered to act as mentors to any member of the club who wishes to have hands-on instruction.  This can be done at the mentor's shop or at the member's home on their own lathe.  It is an excellent way for beginning turners to quickly learn basic skills and safety and for more advanced turners to develop new ideas and skills.  Using your member roster, give any mentor a call to arrange a time.  If you don't have your roster or want to add your name to the mentor list, give the newsletter editor a call.

Each mentor can teach basic skills; some have also listed specific topics in which they are especially interested or have more advanced skills.

Turning(s) of the Month

The featured turning award this month goes to Jim Rinde for his method of pulling finishes through a turning using a vacuum fixture.  See the photos from the October 2010 and the April, September and October 2011 meetings for details.  Jim also has described his work and methods on the World of Woodturning website.  For his description of the VIP process click here.
