Meeting Information: Saturday, 22 October 2011,  9 AM to 1 PM

Hands-On Session

At Cabrillo Middle School Wood Shop in Ventura

Located near the junction of Main and Santa Clara streets on Santa Clara St.

Note that due to insurance requirements only current AAW members may participate in using the lathes: but everyone can watch and learn.

As noted above in blue, our agreement with the school, and due to the AAW insurance policy that covers our activities, only current members of the AAW will be allowed to use the lathes.  Whether or not they plan to turn at this meeting, we strongly suggest that all members of Channel Islands Woodturners join the national AAW for the many benefits including the excellent journal and the annual symposium.  Non-AAW members are encouraged to attend the Hands-On and learn by watching.  If you don't have a lathe and are considering whether to pursue this hobby, we will link you up with one of our mentors and you can practice in their shop.

Remember to bring your safety gear and also wood to turn, sandpaper, superglue, your turning tools (sharpened), and any finishes that you might want to use.  The last twenty minutes committed to cleaning up the shop (if you turn you clean!).

President’s Message

Our September meeting was special!  The session led by Jim Rinde was nothing short of an excellent program in every aspect.  For those who you did not attend, the meeting started with a simple, but well organized lecture by Jim on types of finishes (reactive and evaporative) and their characteristics.  From there five of our members presented their own techniques and opinions.  The meeting ended with Jim’s own presentation of the finish impregnation technique he has developed, using a shop vacuum cleaner.  Thanks to all of you who took time to prepare, and so wonderfully shared your experiences.   A number of us in the audience learned a lot.  The book Understanding Wood Finishes, by Bob Flexner was highly recommended.

The Ventura Star published an article based on CIW’s work with the kids at Cabrillo Middle School.  Click on this link to read about it: http://www.vcstar.com/news/2011/sep/20/channel-island-woodturners-mentor-woodshop-at/

The show-and-tell portion was very interesting as always, but I will not comment any further because of fear that I will forget someone’s beautiful work as I did not take notes.   Keep the good work and experiments coming.  And by the way, let’s have some of the beginners show something during our next meeting.

Our next meeting is this coming Saturday October 22 at 9:00 AM.   This will be a hands-on session combined with show-and-tell, and an open forum where those who do not wish to receive turning assistance are invited to present and discuss their ideas or projects with the other members or simply shoot the breeze.   All beginners and intermediate members are encouraged to bring a work in progress or a new idea that needs validation.

So come out to Cabrillo Middle School in Ventura at 9:00AM on Saturday, and bring your stuff, finished or in progress.

See you Saturday

Pedro
