Join us for a half-day live demonstration by guest woodturner Lyle Jamieson

Lyle will be demonstrating live from his studio in Michigan over the Internet exclusively to CIW in our meeting room. This modern technique of demonstrating woodturning techniques over the Internet is a first for CIW. There will be time for Q&A and back-and-forth dialog between Lyle and those in attendance here in Ventura. The subject of the demo will be hollow form and bowl turning.

From Lyle’s website:

Many teachers have generously given me their tricks and techniques in all phases of turning, but I needed to know the “why”. Sometimes when asking “why” I got the answer, “Because that’s the way it’s been done.” That was not good enough and I set out to figure out the dynamics of turning. Once you understand why a technique works well or why catches happen, then you can open up a whole new avenue of creativity never tapped before. Get in control, remove the fear, let the creativity flow, and have more fun at the lathe. Students can take their abilities to new levels. Once you know the “why,” you have the option of turning what you want and not just copying the “how” others are using. My teaching is process oriented not project oriented.

Here’s a video of Lyle preparing a blank for turning:
