For those of us who are new to Kevin, he is the Director of the Beatrice Woods Center for the Arts where he provides insights of how and why we thrive when we connect art and life. He has guest-curated exhibitions for LACMA, the Craft and Folk Art Museum, the Long Beach Museum of the Arts and many others. Woodturning Artist Joanne Sauvageau

Join us Saturday, January 25th, for a half day demonstration featuring woodturning artist Joanne Sauvageau. Joanne is known for using different techniques to embellish her turnings. She will be demonstrating and sharing her embellishment techniques with us via live remote video demonstration.

From Joanne’s website: “I have always had an interest in creating art in its many mediums, but none have brought as much passion as woodturning. It continues to be a great escape. I lose all concept of time when I stand at my lathe with a wonderful piece of wood. Each piece of wood has it’s own unique character. The woodchips fly and reveal the hidden treasures within. I have worked with exotic woods but my favorite continues to be birch. It’s plain grain is a great canvas to incorporate carving and pyrography into my work! Turning provides an outlet for me to create both utilitarian objects and art. It has opened a whole new world of discovery into other mediums such as copper, leather and stone. But perhaps the most rewarding has been the opportunity to interact with other like-minded wood artists. I have never met a group of people so eager and willing to share their technique and craft!” Visit joannesauvageau.com to view Joanne’s gallery and learn more about her work.

Inside out bowl

Join us Saturday, November 23rd for a free half day demo featuring woodturner Kyle Carmona who will be demonstrating an inside out bowl.

Kyle has been turning and member of CIW since the summer of 2018. His first projects were segmented bowls. At the start of 2019 he saw a picture of a bowl that was made out of a single material but was stained red on the interior and wondered if he could achieve the same result using two different woods. He headed to his Excel spreadsheet and developed a simple model that said it could be done. He refined the building technique on some smaller bowls and then started making larger bowls further refining the building technique and his Excel spreadsheet. This summer he entered three of his two layer bowls into the Ventura County Fair and won first place with each bowl. Out of the wood turning division his Black Limba / Zebrawood bowl was Nominated for Best of Show.

November 2018

Join us for a half-day live demonstration by guest woodturner Lyle Jamieson

Lyle will be demonstrating live from his studio in Michigan over the Internet exclusively to CIW in our meeting room. This modern technique of demonstrating woodturning techniques over the Internet is a first for CIW. There will be time for Q&A and back-and-forth dialog between Lyle and those in attendance here in Ventura. The subject of the demo will be hollow form and bowl turning.

From Lyle’s website:

Many teachers have generously given me their tricks and techniques in all phases of turning, but I needed to know the “why”. Sometimes when asking “why” I got the answer, “Because that’s the way it’s been done.” That was not good enough and I set out to figure out the dynamics of turning. Once you understand why a technique works well or why catches happen, then you can open up a whole new avenue of creativity never tapped before. Get in control, remove the fear, let the creativity flow, and have more fun at the lathe. Students can take their abilities to new levels. Once you know the “why,” you have the option of turning what you want and not just copying the “how” others are using. My teaching is process oriented not project oriented.

Here’s a video of Lyle preparing a blank for turning:
