Mentors

As a member of Channel Islands Woodturners, you are able to work with experienced members who volunteer as mentors.  You may invite a mentor to your shop for one-on-one guidance on the woodturning topic of your choice.  Mentors offer tutoring on everything from setting up your shop to advanced hollowing and segmented turnings.  Mentors who are available for the month are introduced at each meeting.

Hands-On

You may participate in hands-on meetings when you also join the American Association of Woodturners.  The AAW’s liability insurance covers your use of Cabrillo Middle School woodshop equipment and tools. Bring your own tools to learn precise sharpening. Bring a promising log for suggestions on layout.  Use a bowl blank from the shop to practice gouge skills. Bring a work in progress for critique.  Bring a finished piece for tips about your next design.

Library

You have check-out privileges at our library.  At most meetings, the librarian brings our collection of books and DVDs by experts in wood selection, tool techniques, project ideas and artistic design.

Parties

You are invited to social events and are welcome to bring your spouse or significant other.  We gather at a summer potluck and a winter party.
