November, 2011 – John Beaver

  • 1st Project: Embedded wave bowl
  • Quick overview of John's designs
  • Marking block with arc by compass
  • Drilling holes for two registration dowels - drill press is better
  • Freehand cutting the arc on the bandsaw
  • This finish off the saw is adequate
  • Piece of 1/8
  • Glued, dowels in place, and clamp
  • First glue joint completed
  • Held between centers using the Stubby spur center
  • Shaping exterior
  • Forming the tenon on base
  • John's various designs incorporating the wave motif
  • Reversed and hollowed
  • Bandsaw jig base - pivot point
  • Using bowl on the right - transfer inside profile to registration blocks
  • Clamping blocks to bend microwave softened wood insert
  • Shaping the registration blocks to inside radius
  • Using hot glue to fasten the blocks
  • Registration blocks glued in placed and drilled for dowels
  • Centering the bowl on the saw cut line for symmetry
  • First cut removes the top
  • First cut showing registration blocks cut through
  • The second cut removes the wave area to be replaced later with same or wave of contrasting wood
  • Second cut completed
  • Mark on sled for wave thickness
  • Showing step without the insert
  • This sacrificial poplar insert was steamed, pre-bent and dried in a press
  • Pieces held with registration pins without glue using pressure plate on tail stock
  • Drilling holes to gauge depth of material to remove on exterior
  • Cut down to bottom of drilled holes
  • Now replace poplar piece and glue in original center piece that was cut on bandsaw
  • Carefully remove the excess PVA glue
  • Final wave bowl
  • Project 3: Jig set up for straight cut through the base center
  • Transfer internal and external profile to rib stock
  • Cut out rib on inside and outside profile lines with scroll saw
  • Check the fit
  • Clean up saw marks and flatten surface on disk sander
  • Glue rib in place using hose clamps - note tenons on both ends to accomodate clamps - don't overtighten
  • Now ready to glue up
  • Glue cleanup required on exterior only - interior reshaped on lathe - exterior ribs re-shaped by hand as required
  • 2nd Project: Protruding wave bowl
  • Project 3: Ribbed bowl
